X-Games

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) created an escape room experience for four participants, designed to rethink teen smoking addiction through interactive simulations, custom props, and gamification.

Teen Smoking Awareness Escape Room

The ETZEL Agency requested a custom escape room activation for the FDA at the 2019 X-Games in Aspen, Colorado. We reframed the boring conversation about smoking prevention into a thought-provoking, engaging experience where teens were transported into an interactive labyrinth from which only one can escape designed with custom props and gamification elements.

Our approach

The interactive escape simulator was crafted to offer a compelling narrative that reframed smoking addiction for teens, leveraging custom props and gamification elements to enhance engagement.
01

Narrative Design

We crafted a narrative and unique escape room format where 4 participants would enter into identical rooms with only 1 being able to emerge as the winner.
02

Operation Controls

Robust digital and operator control systems were tailor-made for the X-games activation.
03

Tech and Operation Support

Staff support for full operation giving success to the activation during 4 winter and summer X-Games.
04

Easy Implementation

Swift setup and teardown processes were developed and supported by a custom operator manual, to facilitate seamless and efficient deployment.
“Working with the team at the Winter X Games was an awesome, easy experience. We came to them with a general idea our client had of building out a temporary escape room, and they came back to us within a week with a broad design and implementation plan. I would recommend working with them not only for projects that directly involve an escape room but also for any project that requires a multi-step interaction.“
